All of your donations (100%) are used for providing opportunities for recreation to adults with disabilities. Theerikrecfund.org is a small, all-volunteer based fund whose members donate time to ensure that those who are in need are able to fully experience opportunities for recreation in the northeastern Connecticut area. 100% of the funds donated are used to promote, organize, and fund inclusive community experiences. It is designed to allow those with developmental disabilities to more fully engage their community and provide a safe comfortable environment to engage in one of the most basic of human needs, the need to connect.
In the current climate of fiscal cutbacks, there has been a significant reduction in adults with developmental delays ability to engage the community. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) “Nearly everyone faces hardships and difficulties at one time or another. But for people with disabilities, barriers can be more frequent and have a greater impact. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes barriers as being more than just physical obstacles. Here is the WHO definition of barriers:
“Factors in a person’s environment that, through their absence or presence, limit functioning and create disability. These include aspects such as:
- a physical environment that is not accessible,
- lack of relevant assistive technology (assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices),
- negative attitudes of people towards disability,
- services, systems, and policies that are either nonexistent or that hinder the involvement of all people with a health condition in all areas of life.”
The T. Erik recreation fund seeks to help ameliorate the final point made by the CDC, by working to provide access to recreation opportunities currently limited by funding cuts.
